Although not a ghost town, the tiny community of Merritt has evolved through the years with a cluster of occupied homes to this day in a very scenic setting.
A BIT Of HISTORY
Mrs. Ellen Smith, or Mrs. Harry B. Smith, was a native of Wisconsin. She came to Washington Territory in 1885, and located at Prosser. Two years later she relocated to Redmond in King County. In 1892, she, with her husband Mr. Porter, settled in Merritt, Chelan County. Soon afterwards Mr. Porter was killed by a train while he was attempting to cross a railroad bridge on foot.
Several years later she married the well-known H.B. Smith, who for many years operated a hotel in Merritt. He also successfully operated a large ranch.
